H.F.A. : 1 in 7 Michiganders On Medicaid
A new brief from the House Fiscal Agency (HFA) reports that Medicaid in Michigan has grown from 17.5% of general fund/ general purpose to 25% in 2006. This public medical assistance program now covers 15% of Michigan's population, who otherwise would be under- or uninsured. In the current economic crisis facing our state, it is imperative we find a way to lessen the burden on Michigan's already strained resources.
In a recent study by the Anderson Economic Group (AEG), it was found that one way to alleviate the growing costs of Medicaid, is to invest in home care. By looking at data from the Department of Community Health, they found it costs the state nearly four times as much to maintain a person in a nursing home as opposed to caring for them in the comfort of their own home.
